Not a Communist...Yet

After helping my younger brother with some calculus homework last night (I love Skype!), Maggie and I had a little bedtime story courtesy of Barack Obama. LOVED his speech and commentary to students and teachers about being accountable to one another for our shared futures.

"This isn't just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. What you're learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future."

Despite commentary to the contrary, after listening I feel no inner urges to become a communist or socialist nor do I feel he used my tax money to push his own agenda. Weird.

Really? Get it together.

As I sit here at my desk with two free periods, jamming to Cities 97 Sampler Volume 20, Disc 1, I am perusing the NY Times from today. I do this at my desk ocassionally, usually after reading the Star Tribune (Minneapolis newspaper) Twins news. Today's Twins news started with the article "Magie of '06 doesn't seem to be there for '09 Twins" so needless to say I quickly navigated elsewhere...

Here I am today browsing this lovely article on education and President Obama. He plans to give a speech next week about how important school is and how students should work hard and stay in school. Clearly, the Republicans are having a field day with this. I shouldn't single them out because I'm sure when GB addressed students, the Dems weren't too happy either. However, beyond these partisan hostilities, what shocks me is that we cannot find some sort of common ground as a nation. Is educaton not important for every child? Shouldn't every child respect his/her president even if he/she does not agree with the president? Isn't stay in school and work hard a message we want to send students?

Some quotes from the article which I found particularly interesting/blog-worthy:
  • Chris Stigall, a Kansas City talk show host, said, “I wouldn’t let my next-door neighbor talk to my kid alone; I’m sure as hell not letting Barack Obama talk to him alone.”
  • “I don’t want our schools turned over to some socialist movement.”
  • The Republican Party chairman in Florida, Jim Greer, said he “was appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama’s socialist ideology.”
I close with the sentiment: really?
